Dinosaurs from a historical and biological perspective
Begin with a brief introduction/ review of dinosaurs to engage the class(connections to Jurassic Park)
Present facts to help identify physical differences between herbivore and carnivores(make it so it's real life encounters with dinosaurs; what would actually happen if you saw one and how could you know if it's dangerous "travel back in time")
Show them pictures of various dinosaurs and see if they can point out the characteristics that would make them either a herbivore or a carnivore.
Take them back to the 21st century and discuss that the way that we interact with dinosaurs nowadays is to examine their fossils. Then discuss what characteristics paleontologists look for when deciding if the dinosaurs was a carnivore or a herbivore. Show them various pictures of fossils and see if they can identify what kind they are.
Do fossil activity and explain the relation between the activity and how fossils were formed
Prezi presentation on herbivores and carnivores and how to identify them.
How their environment has changed environmentally, physically ect..
Preparation Ahead of Time:

Lesson Plan Outline
Name of lesson: Dinosaurs
Contributors: Sophie Didier, Taylor Fital, Jimmy Grippo Subject: Dinosaurs Grade Level: 3rd
Additional Subjects: History Instructional Setting: Classroom
General Description of Lesson: We are going to teach the students about dinosaurs by initially having a review about some basic facts about dinosaurs. Then we will prepare the students for a time travel to the Mesozoic Era by equipping them with important facts on how to indicate whether a dinosaur is a herbivore (non-threatening) or a carnivore (threatening). We will then travel to the Mesozoic Era where there is a very good chance that we will encounter many dinosaurs which the students will have to decide are threatening or non-threatening by using the knowledge they learned back in the classroom. Once the students have arrived safely back in the classroom they will discuss the different dinosaurs they saw and how each one varied from the other one in terms of physical characteristics. Then they will look at various fossils to decide whether or not a dinosaur was a carnivore or herbivore.
Content Standards Strand/Domain:Life Science Content Standards: Focuses on extinction and the disappearance of the last member of species. It focuses on how extinction has occurs because of a changing environment or conditions. It also addresses many living things that once roamed the earth. This lesson plan also covers the idea of fossils and how they are traces of past living things. By studying the fossils the students will be able to see that some animals and plants look like some that are alive today. (Grade 2 & 4 Concepts) Our lesson plan also touches on the interrelationships between biotic and abiotic factors with how the changing of the ecosystem can have a significant effect to animal populations that could result in migration or death.(Grade 4 Concepts) Topic: Different types of dinosaurs and how the environment has changed since they roamed the earth.
Objective(s) of lesson: The objective of this lesson is to have the students understand the physical and behavioral differences between herbivore and carnivore dinosaurs and also to put them into situations where they have to identify them in "real life" and in the present day by looking at various fossils. Another objective that will be touched on is how the earth has changed since dinosaurs roamed the earth by answering the question " Would dinosaurs be able to survive if they were around today?"
Time Required: 40 minutes
Materials required: smart board, computers, internet, speakers, video camera.
1- In case of offline situation: bring in a powerpoint and give the lesson that way 2- In case we run of time:continue lesson next time 3- If we end earlier: extend fossil making 4- In case the camera did not work:have a backup device going 5- In case of having many computers on the right side that did not login: go the left side
